Air Force Academy (AFA), the premier training centre of the Indian Air, is the cradle of training for pilots, ground duty and technical officers of IAF. 

The Air Force Academy formally came into being when the then President of India, Dr Zakir Hussain, laid the foundation stone on 11 October 1967. The Academy was a vision that sought to focus more on training of the IAF Officers under one roof.

Indian Air Force conducts written Examination annually in February and August for the selection of officers from their various branches. Officers are commissioned as permanent and Short Service. As an officer in the Indian Air Force you will inherit the rich heritage and culture of the IAF fully integrated with the latest technology. Depending on your qualifications, you could join one of the various branches in the IAF. Broadly the Air Force has three branches with further sub-streams as under:

1. Flying Branch

  • Fighters
  • Transports
  • Helicopters


2. Technical Branch

  • Mechanical
  • Electronics


3. Ground Duty Branch

  • Administration 
  • Accounts
  • Logistics
  • Education
  • Meteorology

How to Get Into Air Force through AFCAT

You have to clear following stages to be in Air Force:

Stage 1 – Written Examination
Stage 2 – SSB
Stage 3 – Medical Examination
Stage 4 – Merit

Stage1 – Written Examination 

Written Examination is conducted by Air Force HQ twice in a year, generally in Feb and Aug of each year for course commencing in Jan and July in succeeding year respectively.

Syllabus/Papers

It has only one paper consisting of four parts of 300 Marks of two hours duration. 

Part 1 General awareness- History, Sports, Geography, Environment, Civics, Basic Science Defence, Art, Culture, current Affairs, Politics etc.

Part 2 Verbal Ability in English- Comprehension, Error Detection, Sentence Completion, Synonyms, Antonyms and Testing of Vocabulary.

Part 3 Numerical Ability- Decimal Fraction, Simplification, Average, Profit & loss, percentage, Ratio & Proportion and Simple interest.

Part 4 Reasoning and Military Aptitude Test- Verbal Skills and Spatial Ability.    

Stage 2 – SSB

Stage 3 – Medical

You have to be medically fit. You should not have any medical disability specially heart murmur, Knock Knee, flat foot, etc. It is advised to get medically checked up at an early stage and take remedial measures.

Stage 4 – Merit

It is advised that you must do well in written and SSB so that you get at least more than 50% marks to be sure in merit. 

 

Eligibility (AFCAT)

The best is to attempt AFCAT 2 Examination in Aug; the year you are in the final year of your Graduation, so that you can Join Indian Air Force Academy next year in July immediately after completion of your Graduation. In this, there is no wastage of time. Your age will be ideally suited to reach top rank in the Armed Forces. It is very important that you Join as early as possible. Most of the candidates who join Air Force Academy are in this category.   

Age Limit:

  1. Flying Branch: 20 to 24 years at the time of joining Academy.
  2. Ground Duty (Technical/Non-Technical) Branches: 20-26 years at the time of joining Academy.

Educational Qualifications

  1. Flying Branch – 10+2 with PCM, and graduate with 60% in any stream
  2. Technical Branch – Engineering Graduate with 60%
  3. Administrative Branch – Graduation with 60% in any stream

Physical Standards:

Medically fit in all respect. For details, must study notification before filling up the AFCAT Application Form.
